What is UV Germicidal Air Purification? | Indoor Air Quality

UV germicidal light air purifier

The general consensus among professionals in the HVAC industry is that, contrary to popular thought, a “dirty” forced air system won’t make anyone sick.

Dust particles and debris can be problematic if the air filter isn’t properly maintained, which can greatly affect air quality and cause problems for your HVAC unit. However, there is no evidence that dust particles and other “pollutants” that travel through your ductwork will cause short or long-term problems. These are irritants and can cause great discomfort, especially for those with sensitive respiratory problems. But these factors, while annoying (and ultimately unnecessary), are not the danger they once were labeled.

However, unhealthy microorganisms commonly found in homes, including fungi found on cooling coils and duct systems, CAN lead to health problems such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The difference to some might seem slight, but dust is not your enemy. Especially any dust particles that might escape through your HVAC filtration system.

But concentrations of biological particles and microorganisms are very serious and can cause extreme allergic reactions and health problems. They can also leave your home smelling musty or moldy, which can lead to headaches and nausea.

One solution that can significantly reduce the amount of fungi and bioaerosols in your HVAC system is the use of germicidal UV light filters. Ultraviolet light is a non-chemical approach to disinfection. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) uses ultraviolet light to destroy microorganisms. This method is commonly used to purify food, water, and air. The process is fairly simple, inexpensive and, like a regular filter, requires little maintenance.

How Does A UV Light Filtration System Work?

  • Function – Works like a basic air filter.
  • Installation – Easily installed in the ductwork.
  • Filters Microorganisms – Filters the air (already filtered for dust particles) and catches the microorganisms including mold, mold spores, influenza, bacteria and viruses.
  • Sterilizes – The UV light sterilizes the organisms, eventually destroying them.
  • Safe Dosage – The UV filters are calculated to produce a safe dosage of ultraviolet light (about 16,000 microwatt seconds per square centimeter).
  • Works Continuously – The UV lights work continuously, even when your HVAC system isn’t running, killing organisms on the cooling coil and elsewhere.
  • Reduces Allergy Symptoms – By decreasing the contaminates, UV light filtration can ease the discomfort associated with the typical symptoms. In certain instances it can completely alleviate the symptoms.
  • Reduces Smell – The filtration system will help reduce the musty smell associated with mold spores and other microorganisms.
  • Easy Maintenance – UV germicidal lights should be replaced once a year, similar to the traditional air filters used with your HVAC.

UV germicidal light filtration is just one part of an integrated whole-house system that also includes air purification, ventilation, and humidity control. These components work together to keep mold and other bioaerosols from infiltrating your air and ultimately your household. If you or a family member notice any allergy symptoms that coincide with your HVAC cycles, you should look into a UV light filtration system.
