*UPDATE: 2015 U.S. DOE’s New Water Heater Regulations

Now is the time to replace or convert your water heater! New water heater regulations go into effect on April 16, 2015 for northern states, including all of New Jersey.

2015 Water Heater Regulations

The new U.S. Department of Energy water heater regulations will make replacing or converting your water heater much more expensive due to the new requirements for high efficiency units and more complicated installations. In May, homeowners will wish they had their water heater serviced earlier after getting hit with all of the new equipment and added installation costs for their water heater.

But, these new regulations shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing. Conserving energy and helping the planet is something we should all participate in and the savings in the long run will make up for the high upfront costs:

Standards mandatory in 2015 will save approximately 6 quads of energy and result in approximately $63 billion in energy bill savings for products shipped from 2015-2044. The standard will avoid about 172.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of about 33.8 million automobiles.”

In addition to the long-term savings, the WARMAdvantage Program, part of New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program, will provide large rebates for high efficiency water heaters that meet their manufacturer, installation, and operation requirements. The short-term incentives are significant as well.

If your water heater is over 10 years old, we highly recommend that you consider replacing it, sooner rather than later. Other signs that you should replace your current water heater are long and noisy startups, calcium buildup, and inconsistent or low water temperature.

Waiting another year could mean spending a lot more money on the new, more expensive water heaters. If you install or replace your water heater now, you will still meet the new requirements and end up saving money on what’s currently on the market. The new water heater will be good for another 10 years. Talk to a Gold Medal Service representative about what your options are for high efficiency water heaters that meet your budget.

We repair and install:

Although more expensive, consider switching to a tankless water heater, also known as an on-demand water heater. You will end up making more money back on the savings from your utility bill than what you spend on the unit. Heating water is a home’s second largest energy expense. You can reduce your water costs by 30% with a tankless water heater, which starts up only when you need it, hence “on-demand”. No more unnecesary heating and storing huge amounts of water. And it’s a lot smaller too!
