Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner? | Home Cooling Tips

Your air conditioning system has worked tirelessly for years on end to provide you and your loved ones with a cool and comfortable home. Imagine the kind of day you'd be having if it was 95⁰ outside and you didn’t have a working air conditioner!

It wouldn’t have been a pleasant one, that’s for certain. All throughout the summer, during blistering heat waves and dry afternoons without even the slightest breeze, your A/C powers through, giving all it has to make sure your home is a respite from the heat. But what should you do in the case that you need to replace your air conditioner?

Replace Air Conditioner

After all these years of hard work and dedication, your air conditioning system may not have much left to give. And if that’s the case, it’s time to consider a replacement. The average lifespan of an HVAC system is between 10-15 years, but if your unit is more than 10 years, it is usually more cost-effective to replace it. Age plays such a heavy role in the efficiency of your system, so much that almost every other telltale sign of a unit in need of replacement correlates with its age.

Deciding Whether to Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner

Frequent RepairsAir Conditioning Replacement

If you’re having to call a technician on a consistent basis to come make a repair, you may benefit more from replacing the system. We love our repeat customers, but even more than that, we want our customers to be comfortable through the most efficient and cost-effective means possible.

With that being said, it’ll be cheaper to replace the system than to keep making repairs on it. As a general rule of thumb, when considering whether or not to continue making repairs or to replace, if the cost of the repair is 50% or more than the cost of a new unit, it makes more sense to replace the unit entirely.

Gold Medal Service can inspect your unit and help you decide on the best action to take. It’s possible that a replacement isn’t necessary! However, should you need an air conditioning replacement, our technicians will help you decide on a unit that best suits your budget and property.

Efficiency

Age has a lot to do with how efficient your air conditioning unit is. The older it gets, the harder it has to work. Energy Star recommends upgrading to a new more efficient unit if your system is ten years or older. While the initial price of the installation is more than the cost of a repair, you’ll save money over the long-term with lower utility costs.

The efficiency of your unit is directly related to how well it is maintained. If you don’t perform routine maintenance on your unit, its level of efficiency will decrease drastically, forcing you to replace it sooner than you’d like.

Like a guitar, the more you play it, the more you’ll have to retune it. Having a technician perform an annual tune-up on you air conditioner will allow you to feel more comfortable on a consistent basis. They’ll be able to catch any minor problems before they become a costly affair, and should they find any larger scale problems, they’ll make the repair on the spot.

Neglecting your air conditioner doesn’t do anyone any favors. In fact, you might find yourself spending more money on repairs than you would have had you scheduled a routine checkup.

How often you use your air conditioner

If you were to wear only one pair of shoes for an entire year, you can expect the soles to be worn through by the end of it. Like most things, the more you use your air conditioner, the less efficient it become. You might say, “But you said that the average lifespan of an air conditioner is between 10-15 years?” Yes, that is true, but at the end of the day it’s just that – an average. It could be more, it could be less; it’s dependent on a lot of factors, this being one of them.

If you’re constantly running your air conditioner at a temperature of 65⁰, then you can expect your system to have a shorter lifespan. Air conditioners that run additional hours will have an overall shorter lifespan because they're in use more often.
