Even if you forgot to include these things or you forgot to make a list at all, we have compiled a list of 5 New Year’s resolutions for the home that will save you money and create a safer and more comfortable living environment for you and your family:

1. This year I will remember to seal leaks and insulate my home.

Winter has only just begun. Don’t get caught in the cold just because you didn’t take the time to inspect your home for air leaks.

Finding Air Leaks

A good way to detect air leaks is to go around these areas of your home with an incense/smoke stick and hold it up to areas you where you suspect a leak. Make sure to inspect your air ducts for leakage (attic and basement) as well as around windows and doors. These are the areas that are most prone to air leakage.

Sealing all of your home’s air leaks could save you hundreds of dollars a year. Cheap materials, such as caulk and masting tape will pay for themselves in the very first month. If you are having difficulty locating your air leaks or just want someone to do it for you, a Gold Medal technician would be glad to come and do a blower door test and other equipment to find all the leaks in your home along with solutions for patching them up.

2. I will remember to get a Home Energy Audit.

A home energy audit is when someone comes out to your home in order to determine the efficiency of your home’s heating and cooling. This includes conducting a blower door test and using infared camers to detect areas of poor insulation and air leaks.

No matter where the source of your energy waste is, Gold Medal will help you come up with the best, most cost-efficient solutions for blcoking out the cold and heating while keeping your conditioned air insude.

3. I will remember to use/buy a programmable thermostat.

Google bought Nest in 2014 and are looking to improve its “learning” abilities. For most programmable thermostats, you have to manually enter the time and temperature, but with Nest, all you have to do is adjust the temperature to your desired setting and Nest will remember the time and day until it eventually learns your patterns and begins changing the settings on its own.

Nest Thermostat

Lowering the temperature at night or while away will dramatically reduce your energy costs and keep your home at the right temperature all day long. Additionally, since your heating and cooling won’t be running when they don’t have to, you will extend the life of your HVAC system.

Contact Gold Medal Service today to get recommendations for the best programmable thermostat for your home.

4. I will remember to perform and schedule preventative maintenance.

Preventative maintenance is the best way to stave off high repair and replacement costs. Annual professional maintenance of your heating and cooling system will double the lifespan of your system and will ensure that your warranty stays in effect.

The number one thing that you as a homeowner can do to ensure proper functioning of your HVAC system is to remember to check and/or replace your air filters every 30 days.

In addition to maintaining your HVAC system, make sure that you have an annual electrical safety inspection check. A Gold Medal technician will check all of the following:

  • Tune up main panel
  • Check all wiring, breakers, and fuses for proper operation
  • Check outside meter, enclosure, and main feeders
  • Check ground fault and surge protection for proper operation
  • Check all accessible lights, switches, dimmers, receptacles, ceiling fans, and exhaust fans
  • Check all connection to major appliances
  • Check any exposed wiring in attic, basement and garages
  • Check any outside and inside disconnect
  • And more!

Besides your HVAC and electrical, your plumbing system needs annual preventative maintenance as well! Most people don’t think of their water heater, but in order to get the most life out of them and ensure safe operation, get a plumbing maintenance membership plan to prevent expensive repairs and save on service.

5. I will remember to watch what I put down the drains.

Do Not Flush
