In Hot Water: DOE’s New Water Heater Regulations April 16th

Things are heating up. The U.S. Department of Energy’s new water heater regulations go into effect this April 16, 2015!

What this means for you depends, but we do know that after April 16th, water heater manufacturer and installation costs will rise dramatically for the consumer. Depending on what kind of water heater you have, you could end up spending 2-3x as much on the newer models after April 15th.

U.S. Dept. of Energy New Water Heater Regulations

If your water heater is older than 10 years old or you have already been thinking about replacing your water heater, now is the time to do so! Usually there is a manufacturer sticker located right on your water heater tank that will tell you how old it is. If you don’t know how old your water heater is, give Gold Medal Service a call and we’ll help you.

U.S. DOE's New Water Heater Regulations

You could be in hot water if you wait until after April 16th. For instance, the new, more energy efficient models will add at least an inch and a half to your water heater’s diameter and will be taller as well.  The new higher efficiency units take up more room because of added insulation, so it is important to check your water storage area to see if it can fit the newer units. If your water heater is in a tight water closet or located in the attic, you may need to remodelor relocate your water heater to a larger area. Either way, you are looking to spend quite a bit of money.

To save you the heartache and expense of finding a new home for your water heater or remodeling its existing space, install a cheaper, smaller water heater now. You don’t have much time left, so get out a ruler and measure the space your water heater is in. If the space cannot fit a water heater that is two inches wider and taller, give Gold Medal Service a call to inspect your water heater and offer solutions for service or replacement.

But, these new water heater regulations shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing. The U.S. DOE estimates that if all tanks meet the new energy efficient standards, we can benefit from the following savings:

"Standards mandatory in 2015 will save approximately 6 quads of energy and result in approximately $63 billion in energy bill savings for products shipped from 2015-2044. The standard will avoid about 172.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of about 33.8 million automobiles."

It sort of depends on whether or not you want to save money over a long period of time (due to lower utility bills), or save immediately by avoiding the larger upfront costs of the new water heater regulation requirements. If you are like most people, you will probably want $100 today rather than 27¢ every day for a year. The new units may also carry some unexpected expenses such as new vent piping, remodeling, or higher installation costs. Call the experts at Gold Medal to assess your water heater and give you estimates for alterations or replacement.

Signs You Need to Replace Your Water Heater

  • Over 10 years old
  • Long and noisy startups
  • Calcium buildup
  • Rusty water
  • Water under or around water heater

If you do replace your water heater with one of the existing water heater models or you aren't quite ready for a replacement yet, don't worry about the efficiecy of your water heater. Here are some ways that you can lower your water heater bills:

Gold Medal Lower Water Heater Bill

Another thing you can do to lower water heating bills is install a much more energy efficient and space-saving tankless unit. Tankless heaters only turn on when you need them and last about twice as long as traditional water heaters. If you can't decide between a traditional hot water tank and an incredibly efficient tankless water heater, get the best of both worlds with an hybrid electric water heater. You'll be able to easily convert your existing water heater tank to the new system and save up to 62% on your current water heating bills.
