Simple Steps for Cleaning and/or Changing Your Faucet Aerator
Faucet aerators prevent splashing and control the water flow. If you have a spittering and spattering faucet, the fix is probably a lot simpler than you think. You will get a steadier stream, no squirting, and limit water use. It is a small change with very noticeable results, and the best part is that you can do it yourself!
You can either replace the old faucet aerator with a new one, or clean it and put it back in.
Remove the faucet aerator by taking a pair of pliers and twisting it clockwise when you are looking down at the faucet. If you are afraid of scratching the metal, you can attach some tape to the pliers before twisting. When it is loose enough, you can use your hand to remove it completely.
After the aerator is removed, locate the little rubber gasket with your hand and remove that too. If you don't have long fingernails, you may want to use a small flat-head screwdriver or a similar tool.
If you are replacing the aerator, make sure you take the old one with you when you go to the store as there are many different types of faucet aerators.
If you are cleaning it, rinse it from the inside and outside. If there is stuff still stuck in the aerator, use a thin needle or similar tool to remove the debris.
Now all you have to do is screw it back on. Don't use the pliers for this one. Tighten it as tight as you can with your hands and that is good enough.
Turn on the faucet and watch it flow as it's supposed to.
