It’s Easy Being Green and Energy Efficient

Whether you're traveling or are preparing for guests, there are just so many things to do and think about before Thanksgiving Day.

easybeinggreen

With all the hustle and bustle of the season, it's easy to forget about energy savings and the environment. That's alright though, you can print this list out and pin it to your refrigerator as a reminder.

Start your New Year's resolution a little early this year and commit to keeping your home as energy efficient as possible. Your wallet and conscience will thank us later.

1.) Dishwasher

Contrary to popular belief, washing dishes by hand actually requires more water than if you were to use the dishwasher. Run your dishwasher only when it is full and place it on its most efficient setting.

Most dishwasher manufacturers say it is not necessary to rinse your dishes before placing them in the washer. Save up to 20 gallons by not rinsing.

2.) Washable Cloths

When you're hosting a crowd of people during the holiday season, you don't think twice about throwing a stack of paper napkins on the table or placing a couple paper towel rolls nearby. It's convenient.

However, at the end of the meal, it all ends up in the trash. Consider using cloth napkins that can be washed and reused. In addition, consider using washable cloth towels to clean up any spills in the kitchen.

3.) Compost

New Jersey Green Plumbing

Depending on how many people you will be cooking for this holiday, you may end up with a lot of food scraps. Instead of putting everything down the garbage disposal and making a mess of your plumbing system, consider composting those leftovers.

Did you know that the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for plumbers because excessive food gets dumped into the garbage disposal. Tell your guests this year that you will be composting any scraps and keep a compost bucket next to or under the sink. In the case that you do need a plumber after Thanksgiving, be sure to call the trusted experts at Gold Medal Service.

Not only can we fix any drain or garbage disposal, we can also install or repair kitchen fixtures and features for kitchen remodeling.

Fruits, vegetables, egg shells, breads and coffee grounds are all items that can be composted. If you're new to composting and are unsure as to how to go about doing it, read Home Composting Made Easy. It shows you the do's and don'ts of composting as well as all of its benefits.

4.) Energy Efficient Appliances

Older appliances require more energy than newer, more efficient ones. If your appliances have exceeded 10 years of age, you may want to consider replacing them. Pay especial attention to the age of your refrigerator as it is they biggest appliance in your kitchen and uses the most energy.

Additionally, if you have an older heating system, you could be wasting a lot of money running it every month. The experienced HVAC technicians at Gold Medal Service can conduct a thorough analysis of your home's heating efficiency and recommend solutions for you. Gold Medal's expert technicians are experienced in replacing and installing all types of systems, whether it is a gas furnace, heat pump, or boiler.

Benefits of a new heating system include:

  • Save money on monthly utility bills
  • Maximize comfort in your home
  • Eliminate heating system breakdowns
  • Quieter operation than older units
  • Safer than older units

5.) Using weather-stripping and caulk, seal any or cracks you find.

Inspect your home for proper sealing. Some places, like around doors and windows are obvious places to check for weatherstripping and sealing, but there are many other places around your home that are a little less obvious. Use this map as a reference for detecting and sealing any air leaks in your home.

6. Purchase and Set Programmable Thermostat

Energy Efficient Thermostat

Many older thermostats are only capable of keeping your home at a specific temperature. Newer thermostats allow you to program different temperatures for different times. Gold Medal Service can get you set up with a programmable thermostat today that will save you money and give you the control to heat and cool your home as you like.
