Air Conditioning Seasonal Maintenance Tips | NJ HVAC

air conditioning maintenance tips for spring and summer

Gold Medal Service recently shared 5 Earth Day Home Energy Saving Tips. In addition to the advice mentioned there, we’re supplementing it with some seasonal maintenance tips for your air conditioner.

Annual professional A/C maintenance is highly recommended, but a little attention on your part will help lower utility bills and avoid costly repairs.

As warmer weather approaches, it’s wise to get your A/C system ready for the summer season here in New Jersey. These four tips will have you taking a step in the right direction when it comes to avoiding a HVAC repair this summer.

Seasonal Maintenance Tips for Your Air Conditioner

1. Replace your air filter (depending on the type of air filter and how frequently you need to change it)

It is important to make sure your filter is clear of dirt and debris before the spring and summer season. If you live in New Jersey or the surrounding area, make sure you have a clean filter to start this cooling season in order to maximize efficiency and avoid stress on your HVAC system.

A good test to see if you need to replace your air filter is the light test. Simple hold your filter up to the light and see if rays of light can pass through. If the air filter is so clogged that you cannot see the sunlight through it, you definitely need to replace the filter.

Changing your HVAC filter can sometimes be hard to remember. Your heating and cooling system is down in the basement and as long as you’re comfortable, you have no reason to think about it. To avoid a cooling repair this summer, it is important to change your filter regularly. To help you remember, set reminders to check your air filter at the beginning of each month. This will ensure your filter is changed when needed.

2. Clean the evaporator and condenser coils

Keep in mind that a professional A/C tune-up will include a full and thorough cleaning of your indoor and outdoor units.

If you decide to do your own DIY cleaning, first make sure you turn off power to the A/C at the breaker box. To get at your coils, you will need to remove the front cover. This can usually be done by releasing the clips or unscrewing the screws that keep it in place. Once the front cover is removed, you can clean the insides with a dry cloth or brush. 3. Prep your outdoor unit

It’s time to head outside and take a look at your outdoor heat pump unit. Clear away any leaves and debris around your outdoor A/C unit to improve airflow and energy efficiency. The outdoor condensing unit needs room to breathe so make sure there is a minimum 2-foot clearance around the entire unit.

Sometimes, homeowners want to hide the unit with landscaping or some sort of container, just make sure nothing is getting in the way of proper operation.

This time of year is a perfect time to get outside and get some work done. As you are moving through your list of chores make sure to include clearing any leaves or debris that has collected in or around your outdoor condensing unit. Your outdoor unit needs to be free of obstructions in order to bring cool air in and send hot air out. A unit that is clogged with grass clippings and leaves will cut down on the efficiency and cause your unit to work harder.

4. Schedule a professional tune-up – The first three tips are all things you the homeowner can do. For this last one, you are going to need the help of a professional. A regular HVAC tune-up can preserve the life of your heating and cooling system and help you to correct small problems before they become large problems.

We specialize in A/C system maintenance and tune-ups so you can prevent breakdowns, extend the life of your heating system, and save money on your bills by keeping your system running efficiently. We service all makes and models of heating systems.

Additional cooling season tips for comfort, savings, and energy efficiency:

A quick recap:

  • Check your air filter every month for replacement (set calendar reminders and wait no longer than 90 days to replace).
  • Have a professional HVAC technician conduct a full air conditioning tune-up every year, preferably before the cooling season begins.
  • Consider cleaning your A/C condenser unit and indoor evaporator coils.
  • Make sure the area around your outdoor unit is clean and free of debris.
  • Consider things like UV Air Purification and Aeroseal duct sealing for energy efficiency and comfort improvements.
