10 Fall Maintenance Tasks

  • Schedule your annual furnace tune-up! See our other fall maintenance blog post to learn more about the importance of indoor annual maintenance.
  • Check on your filters regularly and replace them once every 1-3 months. Check your filters regularly; some warranties even require it. If you have pets, you'll find yourself changing your filters more often. No pets = 90 days; 1 pet = 60 days; more than 1 pet/allergy problems = 30-40 days.
  • While at home, set the thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Reset your thermostat when you are sleeping or away from your home. There are now WiFi thermostats where you can monitor and adjust the heating and air conditioning remotely.
  • Save as much as 15% annually on heating costs by turning the temperature back 10-15% while away.
  • Make sure your fireplace has heat-retaining features. We highly recommend using fake, eco-friendly logs. Although you may not need your chimney sweeped every year, it's a good idea to schedule a professional chimney inspection every year.
  • Keep any shades or curtains on the south side of your home open during the day to allow for solar heating. Keep them closed at night.
  • Lock any windows not being used, as the tightness will get rid of any drafts. As you prepare for winter, remember that there are many ways to insulate your windows, including: plastic insulating film, insulating drapes, expandable foam spray, caulk, and weatherstripping. This video shows you how to apply the plastic insulating film to your windows:

  • Seal air leaks around doors and windows by adding caulk or weatherstripping. Use a smoke stick or piece of incense to detect drafts. If the smoke is blown or sucked in, you have a leak. Use expandable foam spray for any gaps greater than a quarter of an inch. Use caulk for any gaps smalled than that. If you are caulking around the exterior of your home, use a weather-proof caulk. Don't forget; you'll need a caulk gun. Here is a good how-to video for weatherstripping your doors:

  • Turn down the temperature of your water heater to a warm 120 degrees Fahrenheit. It will reduce the amount of mineral buildup in your pipes and will save you about $50 annually. Also, it's probably a good idea to check your water heater's anode rod for possible corrosion:

  • Be mindful of the meals you prepare. It takes significantly more energy to prepare meat than it does to prepare a vegetable or other plant based meal. Consider implementing a "Meatless Monday" in your home.
